Industrial Site Clean-up
Toronto, Ontario
Background
The Fiton process was approved for use as a cleanup technology in Ontario. The process was reviewed by the Ministry of the Environment prior to the issuance of a Certificate of Approval. A Ministry of the Environment letter stated that, “the Fiton process can withstand fluctuations in pH and temperature and is particularly effective in treating petroleum contaminants from high concentrations down to the low parts per million (ppm) range.” E.B. Rodrigues, Ph.D. Coordinator, Environmental Cleanup Fund.
The Fiton process was used to remediate approximately 7000m3 of contaminated soil in a 12.5Ha parcel of land adjacent to the Don River in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The site was contaminated with a variety of industrial chemicals including PAH’s, PCP, and petroleum compounds including benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and zylenes.
Objective
The Metro Toronto and Region Conservation Authority sought to remediate a 12.5Ha site in order to rezone as parkland.
Results
As a result of the cleanup, the site owned by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority was rezoned from industrial to parkland use to increase the amount of useable green space in the city of Toronto while preventing further contamination of the Don River which flows into Lake Ontario.
